Mindfulness classes
We run regular mindfulness classes and workshops that have been created to bring like-minded people together and inform you about the principles of mindfulness, the benefits, and the simple ways that you can incorporate mindfulness practices into your own life, as well as that of others.
We offer a range of workshops for different ages, and whether you are looking to attend something in person, or if you'd like to attend the course from the comfort of your own home, we have something for everyone!
What is mindfulness?
Put simply, mindfulness means gently focussing your attention on the current moment… focusing on how you are feeling in the here and now, what you are thinking, or what is going on in your surroundings.
So many of us spend a large portion of our day living in the past or future, and we don't even realise it…
“I'm really worried that my Manager won't be impressed with my business proposal later this week that I have worked so hard on”
“I can't believe I had to cancel that catch up with my Friends last weekend, I wonder what everyone thought about me cancelling?”
"I really want the next 4 weeks to go as quickly as possible so that I can finally enjoy the long-weekend I have booked"
The list is endless! And these thoughts that we have about the past or future, can actually impact our mood and how we act and feel in the here and now. This can result in us feeling stressed or sad about something that hasn’t even, or may never actually happen, or it can prevent us from enjoying the micro moments throughout our day that make us feel happy or calm, if we wish our time away for something exciting in the future.
Simple mindfulness practices allow us to learn to experience the here and now. They enable us to catch ourselves when we are having thoughts worrying about the past or future, and to see these thoughts for what they are… thoughts! With gradual practice we can learn to observe our thoughts without judgement, and are able to take back control of how we are feeling and any action we take in any given moment.
Some of the benefits reported by those who practice mindfulness include; reduced stress, improved sleep, becoming more self-aware, feeling more in control and more able to choose how to respond to thoughts and feelings, in addition to feeling more able to cope with difficult thoughts and feelings in general…
How are the mindfulness classes & workshops taught?
We offer a range of workshops and classes, varying in length and for different ages.
Classes for children allow parents to bring their children to a weekly 1 hour session introducing basic mindfulness principles from a young age, and all classes include an activity to complete together. These classes also share simple practices that you can use within your own home to promote the overall well-being of your whole family.
For adults we run a 90 minute introduction to the principles of mindfulness workshop, in addition to a more in depth course ran over three weeks with each class being 1 hour long. This more detailed course is for everyone who would like to learn more about the theory and benefits of mindfulness, and the different practices you can build into your everyday life. Please see our "Book a class" page for more information about the classes and workshops we are currently running.
We also offer private workshops for families, if for example, you have a child that is struggling with anxiety or low self-esteem. We can work with you to share some simple but effective practices you can build into your family life, to help look after and improve both your own and also your child's well-being.
What do the mindfulness classes & workshops cover?
Depending on which class or workshop you attend, the depth of the content will vary slightly.
Topics covered in the adult classes include:
-
Ways that you can learn to notice your thoughts and how they come and go in your mind.
-
Understanding how thoughts work, that they are not facts, and that they do not define who you are.
-
Ways to notice feelings within your body and what that feeling is telling you, for example, you might notice that your chest feels tight when you are anxious.
-
Ways that you can practice observing your thoughts and then letting them go. With practice you can learn to put space between yourself and your thoughts, allowing you to choose how you want to react, and feel calmer.
Our classes for children and families will look at ways we can explore the topics above, in an age appropriate way.
For example, the children’s’ classes:
-
Encourage children to focus on the present moment, and this usually involves focussing on a fun activity together within the class.
-
Teach simple breathing techniques that you can practice and use within your family from a young age.
-
Share a variety of simple grounding techniques that can be used, when children are feeling sad, anxious or overwhelmed.
-
Introduce children to visualisation through storytelling.
-
Teach small habits that with practice can help build your child’s self-esteem.
